Unidentified homeless man dies from suspected exposure
Staff Reporter AN unidentified homeless man was found dead on a street in Windhoek early morning in the extreme cold the country is facing.
His lifeless body was found on Wednesday morning by members of the public alongside the road next to the State Veterinary Clinic on Robert Mugabe Avenue who alerted the police around 07:00 but according to security officials at nearby sites, he had been lying there since 04:00. According to them, they "were just unsure as to whether or not he was conscious".
They did not say why they did not call for help. The cause of death has not been confirmed but police officials said that the victim most likely died of the extreme cold.
The unidentified victim is suspected to be in his mid-30s and he was not found with any identity documents.
His shoes were lying next to him. According to the police officials who were on the scene, the matter was brought to their attention at around 07:00 when a person came to the Windhoek police station to report a man was lying alongside the road and that he looked unconscious.
At the scene, the police officials found that he was unconscious, showing no signs of movement, and neither was he breathing. They called an ambulance and it arrived at around 08:00.
The man was declared dead on the scene. The man had no wounds on his body or signs of any injuries. The body was transferred to the police mortuary and investigations continue.
